Girls Day Out

What a beautiful Sunday... we started our day with a morning walk around Choa Chu Kang, and then we went playground hopping ... we went from one playground to another playground, Avery led us around. It was very fun.

Later while we were walking, suddenly Ashley complaint that she had a stomach upset. She then asked me to stop at the bus stop to rest awhile. While we were resting at the bus stop we saw a girl who is afraid of sun, she was holding an umbrella even under the shade, we kept on laughing at her until she went up the bus.. hahaha..

We realise that the sky was getting dark, we decided to go to the nearby coffeeshop to have our breakfast. While walking, Ashley complaint again and this time she said that she is going to toilet, we quickly ran to look for the toilet, her stomache was so painfully and she turned pale, I decided to carry her although she was around 25kg, and Avery followed behind me. Ashley asked me to put her down because she was worried that I will injured myself, even she is not able to walk, I assured her and she let me carried her to the toilet. Luckily after that she was well and we went to eat our breakfast.

During breakfast, Ashley said a prayer,

Finally, Avery's dancing teacher announce the dancing results, Avery class made it thru.. to the second grade. I am so proud of Avery as the teacher mentioned that she is the youngst among the class, age from 4 - 5 years old as Avery is only 3 years old. and she did quite well.

The girls in her class really takes good care of Avery, all the older girls will take turns to take care of her. Avery really enjoyed her dancing class and she learns to speak Mandarin which she does not speak at home she also sing chinese songs too.

AVERY'S CONCERT AT NAFA (Campus 3)

We were late for the mock up looking for the campus, haha... not only us, lots of them were late too.The map given to us was not clear, i've actually asked to alight at the roadside and check with the Security guard at campus 1 (clever huh.... instead of looking for the campus driving round and round for nearly 15 mins...) I've managed to carry Avery all the way to campus 3 about a few kms away...

Avery's Concert finally arrived... with so much of pratices and extra lessons given by her dancing teacher, 蔡老师, They were really good, very impressive. Avery is the youngest among her class, her classmates are from 4 to 5 years old. I will post up the pictures of her once i get it from my friend and from the professional photographer.

The school does not provide makeup, parents were asked to help. Stage makeup is a challenge for me, this is the first time, I did help to makeup for children, it is really a challenge, abit different from the norm one. I did it quite well too..

Avery dances very well on stage, she did not cry as she promised me. She told me she like dancing ... and alot of jie jie and kor kor looked after her while she was at the backstage, they fed her with bread and biscuits as well as chocolate, she was so happy...she wanted to continue her 2nd year. And her attitude change since sunday, she is more open and playing with children... without me around. I hope she can continue...

Today, was a busy day, Ashley's piano class was postponed to coming wednesday so I arranged with Jarell's Mommy for a short meet up for the kids to play. I started off my day with the usual breakfast and marketing with Avery... while Ashley stay home to watch her TV program. After marketing we rushed over to Hwee Ching's (MIL) house.. for a swim. The children really enjoyed themselves :P as well as both mommies. After swimming Ashley went for her phonics class and i brought Avery to her Dancing class and followed by Dinner at my buddy's place.. both my girls knocked out by 9pm.

A friend of mine, just came from back her marriage Counseling Session which was initiated by her husband which was postponed from Tuesday to thursday.. finally over, this session lasted about 1 and half hours and it did not end well...the Counselor advised the husband to lay off and give space to the wife,( my friend) and asked the husband not to force the way thru as the wife (my friend) might not be able to take it anymore. After the session the Counselor felt speechless and she was quite concerned for my friend, she asked the husband to stay off for a while and let the wife cool down for a period of time. The Counselor also felt that the more the husband show concern (maybe he meant good) but he is giving the wife more stress....

Bangkok Trip..

Just came back from bangkok on Sunday... thou very tired but a fruitful one. Many friends and colleagues said that it is not advisable to go to bangkok at that point of time because there might be riots.... etc looking at the situation getting better i decided to just go for it and also with an assurance from a good friend of mine, if any situation arised i can call for help.

This time i did not bring my kids along. Me and my buddy intended to go there just to shop and relax without kids and spouse but her hubby wanted to tack along so did mine. Anyway they became handy, they helped us to carry our baggage for us. We stayed at Baiyoke Suite Hotel near Pratunam Centre, the center of the shopping paradise. We went to Pratinum mall, the weekend market as well as the MBK.. Without kids around we tried the roadside food like the "wantan mee" the teochew fishball noodles and fried rice and chicken wings etc.. it tasted yummy... but not the weird fried grasshopper and the worm... yeeeeeeee.. i will never try.

We managed to shop, eat and massage... massage and massage.... so shiok... just as what my friend told me, i will suffer later, just like what he had said... oh.. i am suffering.. i need massage :( HELP me..

Here are some photos of the hotel bed room. This is a quad room. Room for 4 person. Just as we needed. Big and spacious, we girls gathered all our findings while the guys slept in the next room. We talk and talk until we fell asleep, just like the old days..

My 2nd Genting Trip from 5 - 7 Sept

Just came back from Genting. We drove up with Ashley's classmates and their Daddies and Mommies. Altogether 7 kids, 5 Mommies and 4 Daddies. The kids really enjoyed themselves with laughters, arguments and fun. The mummies and daddies were tired but happy. Very tired..Especially me.... carrying my little sweetie pie.. 15 kgs around Genting. Thanks to Avery for my muscles... which i dont really want :P

How we spent our 3 days 2 nights at Genting Highland?

Mostly eating and playing with the kids.. Outdoor theme park .... indoor theme park and indoor theme park, the children went crazy going for the junior bumper car. They went rides after rides... without stopping. Until one or 2 parents need to block the kids from entering the queue to the bumper car ride. My Ashley who is always so shy became very daring too. Now she can ride the bumber car and maneuver like a pro...

They also enjoyed the rodeo rides (similar to the adult's ride which is called the "Space Shot")... it will bring them up and down.. they shouted "fly fly fly"... throughout the ride and didnt even want to stop when it started to drizzle.

We, adults also have our own little excitement and adventureous rides like Cyclone, Space shot and Spinner. I will upload the photos once i get it from my friends. After we were done with the outdoor theme park, we went to the indoor theme park to continue the rides, so call the babies rides... so slow and errrr... but Avery enjoyed it so much. Avery requested one ride after another while the rest of the older children went for more exciting ones with their Daddies while some mommies went shopping, i was stucked with Avery going for rides after rides.

To be fair , we mommies gathered at in one of room to chit chat and took care of the children. While the daddies went to casino for a “walk and see”.

On the last day, Ashley complaint that she was not well, and she had stomachache, she did not even touch her favourite Mcdonald breakfast. I was so worried, i did not bring any medication which i ususally do. Luckily Wee Ling,my daughter's best friend's mom brought some medications, So I gave Ashley the chinese medicine for stomachache (thought it was just the normal stomache upset, I should have given her the Lacteol fort instead which will control her stomach flu (which i came to realise after i brought her to the doctor), anyway she hesitated at first but later after my persuasion she was so brave and swallowed the half bottle of the "po chai yun" she felt better and started to play with the kids. But during lunch she vomitted everything that she had consumed.... poor Ashley :( She was ok in the car and when she reached home, she even joke alot while she was in the car, she had her bath and slept but later i found that she was feverish, took her temperate and found that she was having fever, i quickly bring her to the doctor and doctor diagnosed her for stomache flu.

In this trip we can see that the older kids can take turns to take care of the younger ones in some of the rides. They suddenly became sensible to us overnight. the kids are really very amazing.

After this trip, I realise that Ashley is very popular with the boys.... all the best to her Dad.

Taking care of a group of children is really tedious.. chaotic... horrendous.... whatever. I really salute the teachers.

This year Our Bosses got the Secretaries and admin staffs to cook instead of them cooking for us. It was fun fun fun, a wonderful and an awesome experience, indeed an enjoyable one... we actually get to work together as a team and managed to cook a sumptuous spread of international Buffet with a little bit of Indian mixed with Malay, Chinese, Western and even Vietnamese cooking style.. The menu and receipes were like alien to us, some of the ingredients! we never even hear before, how to cook? Others?cooking the very first time.we were actually lost, dont know where to start, and how to cook but.... we managed and also with flying colors......

Trip to Pasir Ris - Kids Kampong

Ashley has been asking to go to this place... finally got to go there,though it is a bit far, the weather is very hot but it was fun fun fun...

This brought back some of my wonderful childhood memories while staying at 6 Avenue..... I used to climb down the big longkangs with my brother and neighbours to catch fishes; like guppies, japanese fish and even catfish ,hee...I was the only girl there running around with the boys playing boy games. like catching spiders, grasshoppers and dragonflies as well as "harmthumb bolah" they call it in Malay. , I am not so tomboy anyway i also do girls things like playing chatek, five stones, zero point, one leg and also catching of butterflies etc keke...

I remembered the big longkangs, they are usually very deep down, really must climb down slowly because it is usually very steep and very deserted with long grasses, maybe snakes too. Now thinking of it, it is really nerve-racking. I can already feel a chill down my spine liao.. I will never do such a thing. yeeeeeeeerrrrr. I cant imagine doing such horrendous things.

We have our own garden of orchids infront of our house. I will help my father to catch snails, snails with no shell... eating my dads orchids. I will help to put salt on them and they will start to melt. There are days at night that we will go out to the big drain infront of my house to catch frogs for our Arowana fish my dad kept. The frogs are like those small ones we can find in the shops selling fishes.

My dad and mom had a place to keep ducks, chicken and goose. I used to have a pet duckling and when it turn bigger I kept it at the farm but it became a python's feast. I was so sad, I cried for days and I've told myself not to bring back any chick or duckling home. I also used to keep a pet dog who will follow me wherever I go. It was given away when we move to our HDB flat to stay.. Staying there, i got to run around, even to the stables to see horses and sometimes we also get a chance to watch horse racing too. I remembered during those days especially on Monday, i can see river of blood in the big drain infront of my house... some poor horses are shot because they injured their legs and could no longer race, so they are put down, and sent to zoo to feed the lions... thats what we were told.

Headache .... headache....... headache. What to do? this is my second maid within 5 months. You must be thinking,is it my problem or the maids'... keke... of course not mine lah.. i've already been very lenient to her and very patient as well. Communication is the problem although i know a little bit of Malay, but still cant work out. I get very frustrated when my maid said that she understands and than she do all things wrongly. I think they are trained to say yes to everything, we employers tell her, even though they dont understand.The worse thing is My girls are still not used to her, they insisted that i do everything for them. ooh... then why need maid? she only do housework and sending my younger girl to Pre-nursery. I think this is a waste of $$ lor. I will enrol Avery in childcare again and let go the maid. then I shall be the maid. Although it will be abit hard but thinking otherwise i can train my girls from young doing housechores rather than depending on maids to do everything for them. Dilemma...

Whole grains help deflate belly rolls
Study of obese adults also found reduced inflammation in blood vessels

Cutting calories helps people lose weight, but doing so by filling up on whole grains may be particularly heart-healthy, new research suggests.
In a study of obese adults at risk of heart disease, researchers found that those who trimmed calories and increased their whole-grain intake shed more belly fat and lowered their blood levels of C-reactive protein or CRP.
CRP is a marker of chronic, low-level inflammation in the blood vessels, and both abdominal fat and CRP, in excess, are linked to heart attack and stroke.

In contrast, dieters in the study who mainly ate refined grains, like white bread, were able to lose weight, but they trimmed less fat from the middle and showed no change in CRP.

The findings offer yet more incentive for Americans to opt for whole grains over highly processed versions, according to the researchers.

"This is the first clinical study to prove that a diet rich in whole grains can lead to weight loss and reduce the risk of several chronic diseases," Dr. Penny Kris-Etherton, the senior researcher on the study, said in a statement.

She and her colleagues at Pennsylvania State University report the findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In general, experts recommend eating whole grains — such as oatmeal, brown rice and barley — rather than refined grains, like white bread and other products made from white flour. Whole-grain foods retain more of the nutrients and fiber components of the grain.

This fact might explain why dieters in the current study showed added benefits when they ate whole grains, according to the researchers. For example, fiber-rich foods may have kept participants' blood sugar levels more stable throughout the day, and this, in turn, may have lowered their CRP levels.

Possible antioxidant benefits
Alternatively, CRP might have dropped because of the antioxidant nutrients that are present in whole grains but depleted in refined ones.

The study included 50 obese men and women who had metabolic syndrome, a collection of several risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and stroke — such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.

All of the study participants cut calories for 12 weeks, but half were instructed to strive for whole grains, while the rest were told to choose refined grains. The whole-grain group was told to look for products with "whole grain" listed as the first ingredient on the label.

In the end, the average weight loss was about 8 to 11 pounds in both groups. However, the average CRP level dropped by 38 percent in the whole-grain group, while remaining unchanged in the refined-grain group. In addition, while both groups showed a similar change in waistline size, the whole-grain dieters showed a greater reduction in the percentage of fat around the middle.

The researchers recommend that consumers look at labels and be careful to choose products that are good sources of whole grain.
"There are a lot of foods around that claim they contain whole grain but are not really major sources of whole grain," Kris-Etherton said. She suggested looking for foods like oatmeal, breakfast cereals made from whole grains, whole-wheat pastas, granola and popcorn.

As a general rule, she said, consumers should buy grain products that are at least 51percent whole grain. Products that put health claims about whole grains on their labels are required to contain at least that much whole grain.

Valentine's Day Celebration

This year Valentine's Day fall on Thursday, Ashley needs to go for her Mandarin class so David suggested to have an early celebration. We went to this Restaurant at Marina South Pier,called "Sante Fe".This place is very cosy and romantic.. we actually chose to have our Dinner on the deck at the top of the ship but Avery was afraid, and it was very windy outside... so we decided to dine inside at the lower deck instead. There are some pictures of the restaurant..

This is my main course...the serving was very big so i shared with both my gals

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.

The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.

The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals, united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.

The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year's Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or weilu. It symbolizes family unity and honors the past and present generations.

Taboos and Superstitions of Chinese New Year

House Cleaning

The entire house should be cleaned before New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve, all brooms, brushes, dusters, dust pans and other cleaning equipment are put away. Sweeping or dusting should not be done on New Year's Day for fear that good fortune will be swept away. After New Year's Day, the floors may be swept. Beginning at the door, the dust and rubbish are swept to the middle of the parlor, then placed in the corners and not taken or thrown out until the fifth day. At no time should the rubbish in the corners be trampled upon. In sweeping, there is a superstition that if you sweep the dirt out over the threshold, you will sweep one of the family away. Also, to sweep the dust and dirt out of your house by the front entrance is to sweep away the good fortune of the family; it must always be swept inwards and then carried out, then no harm will follow. All dirt and rubbish must be taken out the back door.

Bringing In the New Year and
Expelling the Old

Shooting off firecrackers on New Year's Eve is the Chinese way of sending out the old year and welcoming in the New Year. On the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, every door in the house, and even windows, have to be open to allow the old year to go out.

New Year Activities Set Precendent

All debts had to paid by this time. Nothing should be lent on this day, as anyone who does so will be lending all the year. Back when tinder and flint were used, no one would lend them on this day or give a light to others.
Everyone should refrain from using foul language and bad or unlucky words. Negative terms and the word "four" (Ssu), which sounds like the word for death, are not to be uttered. Death and dying are never mentioned and ghost stories are totally taboo. References to the past year are also avoided as everything should be turned toward the New Year and a new beginning.
If you cry on New Year's day, you will cry all through the year. Therefore, children are tolerated and are not spanked, even though they are mischievous.

Personal Appearance and Cleanliness

On New Year's Day, we are not suppose to wash our hair because it would mean we would have washed away good luck for the New Year. Red clothing is preferred during this festive occasion. Red is considered a bright, happy color, sure to bring the wearer a sunny and bright future. It is believed that appearance and attitude during New Year's sets the tone for the rest of the year. Children and unmarried friends, as well as close relatives are given lai see, little red envelopes with crisp one dollar bills inserted, for good fortune.

More New Year Superstitions

For those most superstitious, before leaving the house to call on others, the Almanac should be consulted to find the best time to leave the home and the direction which is most auspicious to head out.
The first person one meets and the first words heard are significant as to what the fortunes would be for the entire year. It is a lucky sign to see or hear songbirds or red-colored birds or swallows.
It is considered unlucky to greet anyone in their bedroom so that is why everyone, even the sick, should get dressed and sit in the living room.
Do not use knives or scissors on New Year's Day as this may cut off fortune.
While many Chinese people today may not believe in these do's and don'ts, these traditions and customs are still practiced. These traditions and customs are kept because most families realize that it is these very traditions, whether believed or not, that provide continuity with the past and provide the family with an identity.

look at this... it took me around 6 hours to finish this pineapple paste... a bit tedious but.... i am happy. I did this all by myself... to cut pineapple, grate it, sift to drain out the pineapple juice and cook it till it is dry.. btw i used charcoal hor... need to start fire as well... anyway it turns out well, no burn and it is healthy too, i did not used so much sugar.

Our 3 pet fishes are below: they are No.1, No.7and Heart; 1 belongs to Ashley, 7 belongs to me and the Heart shape is Avery's. Hee.... you must be wondering up i am talking about huh, let me explain, we bought 3 fishes from Qian Hu... the fishes are the normal red fish but, these fishes are in white and there is a number or a heart shape printed on its body, looks cute.

Today, i just came to know that Ashley's Speech and Drama Teacher Ms Chang who had been teaching Ashley for 2nd year is my Cousin, my long lost cousin, our family did not contact since i was young due to whatever reason I dont know, but I am really very happy to see her because i remembered i used to go to her house when i was young. She taught me alot of things, piano etc... but i did not make it. Maybe i am not cut for that haha... no music talent. We will arrange to meet up soon... Happy reunion.:)

Short Trip to Kuantan

This is our 2nd trip to Velnie's house. We heard from Velnie's Dad that he had actually built a house in Kuantan and it is completed and wanted as to go their for a short holiday, we didnt expect the house to be so big. It is a three storey bunglow with 5 rooms, Jacuzzi in the one of the bedroom, with a huge rooftop, karaoke room, and a so call meeting room with very high ceiling. We never dream of staying in such an enormous house...

Ashley started to cry when going to school after soo.. long, she mentioned that her Form Teacher, Teacher Ng scolded her because she don't know what word start with the letter "P"but she knew... dont know why? I tested her and she indeed know she had given me at least 8 words that spelled starting with "P". I called the teacher and check what happened, the teacher told me that Ashley is actually performing very well in school and she is partnered with a weaker boy to help him.. . Ashley is a very sensitive girl... very emotional too..
